COMENIUS SmartPack (2013-2015)

AEVA - ASSOCIAÇÃO PARA A EDUCAÇÃO E VALORIZAÇÃO DA REGIÃO DE AVEIRO - succeeded, once again, in coordinating another Comenius Partnership (Bilateral), between 2013 and 2015. The project was developed by the VET school of Aveiro - ESCOLA PROFISSIONAL DE AVEIRO - and, throughout this period, both students and teachers worked hardly to promote and enhance the development of intercultural and entrepreneurial skills in students. Several activities were held and all the information can be accessed at:

The Project

Successful Measures and Real Targets - A Survival Pack for Active Citizens

The winning Logo

This logo represents the idea of union between the European countries. The action of uniting the puzzle shows the will of all citizens to share language, culture and tradition. The colours used identify the countries involved in the project and the European community. We designed two stars that indicate the two cities (Roma-Aveiro) that are involved in the project and remind of the stars of the European flag.

Summary

The partnership wants to increase students’ awareness of European Citizenship: students will research about it, think of its implications in terms of rights, duties, and real prospects for their lives as adults, inhabitants of a wider space compared to that of the previous generations. We want to help them figure out the possibilities as well as the drawbacks and difficulties of having to cope with a social and professional environment that considers the whole space of Europe.

The idea of a SMART pack that includes knowledge, competences and strategies about living and working in another European country responds to the need of making the issue as practical as possible showing that Citizenship affects matters such as every-day situations like communicating in another language or finding accommodation abroad, as well as more crucial questions like applying for a job. The meaning of the title (Successful Measures and Real Targets: A Survival Pack for Active Citizens) develops the objectives of the partnership and alludes to the driving force that such targets can propel into the participants’ lives. We also want to develop cultural knowledge about both countries, create new links for future co-operation and increase mobility within Europe. As for all Bilateral partnerships, a fundamental moment will be the Class Exchange. This experience will provide facts and ideas for the pack thanks to interviews and questionnaires to youth and adults about Citizenship. Learning a new language other than the language of communication and living abroad during the mobilities will also provide real material as for intercultural and linguistic competences. Finally meetings with the worlds of business and university will arouse students’ interest in the world of globalized work.

Objectives:

Concrete objectives:

• Prepare the students for an active European Citizenship;

• Promote the intercultural competence among students;

• Make the students aware of the actual and real problems of the labour market;

• Prepare the students for the possibility of living and working in another European country;

• Promote the learning of less known European languages (Portuguese and Italian);

• Enhance the communication in English language;

• Enhance the use of ICT;

• To share examples of good practice carried out in the different institutions to be able to better respond to the needs and motivations of learners;
• To improve transnational mobility of people (both teachers and learners) to ensure that our strategies are functional and viable by exchanging in situ experiences and different viewpoints;

• To incorporate the target culture into the foreign language classroom by developing a dossier of culture-based activities;
• To incorporate lifelong learning in everybody involved in the project.

Subjects and/or problems we intend to address:

• Diversity in the classroom in terms of diverse educational backgrounds and personal objectives;

• Fear of travelling;

• Anxiety towards their future in the labour market;

• Lack of initiative, of autonomy, of looking for specific information;

• Addressing the issue of learners’ motivation;

• Raising the importance of cross-cultural awareness in the language classroom;

• Addressing the importance of lifelong learning which will enable them to be integrated into society;

• Addressing the needs of learners who are at a risk of exclusion (drop outs, economic reasons, etc);

• Lack of linguistic and/or cross-cultural competence;

• Involving teachers and learners in EU projects in order to share language and cultural experiences;
• Bridging geographical and cultural boundaries of both teachers and learners through transnational mobilities.

Approaches:

• Both schools applied last January for a Comenius Assistant from the partner country. This will help a lot in the promotion of both languages and cultures among everybody involved in the project;

• We will have to adopt an open, eclectic, flexible, methodological approach adapted to the specific needs and diversity of teachers and learners;

• Individual and group research in an autonomous way;

• Peer tutoring, cooperative work;

• Brainstorms / group discussions;

• Exploiting ICT for communication and developing of outcomes.
